The arts (music, visual art, dance, drama, etc.) speak to our souls and offer an outlet for expression. But sometimes we need a little extra help. Our sister company, START Creative Arts Therapy Services, has a team of specialized and certified therapist that use the arts in their mental health practices to help others grow and overcome. You do not need to have any prior music, art, dance or acting experience to participate in creative arts therapy! You only have to be willing to try something that may feel different for you! Sometimes in this newness and discomfort we can make the greatest strides.

  • Art Therapy

Art therapy includes the visual arts. Drawing, painting, collaging, sculpting, film, etc. are used in a session. Completed works provide a tangible representation of your experiences that can be explored further through imagery and words. Together we “decode” non-verbal messages, symbols, and metaphors to gain better insight of your feelings, behaviors, and goals. We can also reprocess memories and alter them in a way that transforms how you recall them, how you feel embodied emotions, and reduce triggers.

  • Music Therapy

Music therapy is a process in which intentional music experiences are facilitated to help a client achieve therapeutic goals. Methods used may include songwriting, song singing, improvisation, drumming, guided imagery, music listening, and other music experiences alongside talk therapy. Benefits include decreasing anxiety, facilitating emotional expression, and increasing insight into one’s self and relationships. Methods and interventions are chosen based on a client’s needs and preferences.

  • Dance & Movement Therapy

Dance/Movement therapy is used to guide body-based self-discovery and transformative creative expression. The primary goal is to build new psychophysical capacities by expanding expressive freedom, strengthening self-esteem, and developing new emotional resources. Safety is prioritized to allow embodied experiences, or internalized states, and body language to inform discussions, make meaning, and “move” feelings, thoughts, and behavioral patterns to improve the quality of your life.

  • Drama Therapy

Drama therapy uses play, embodiment, projection, role, storytelling, metaphor, enactment, distancing, witnessing, performance and improvisation to help people make meaning. Clients are invited through action and experientials to rehearse desired behaviors, practice being in relationships, expand and find flexibility between life roles, and perform the change they wish to see in themselves.
